Blue Demons and Panthers Play to 1-1 Draw

CHARLESTON, Ill. – DePaul and Eastern Illinois played to a 1-1 tie on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field. A goal in the first half by Lauren Spacht gave the Blue Demons the early 1-0 advantage, but Eastern Illinois tied the match in the second half and forced a scoreless overtime.
Just 88 seconds into the match Kelly DeBaene and Alissa VonderHaar combined to find Spacht. DeBaene started the play at midfield and dribbled into the Eastern Illinois defense where she found VonderHaar. VonderHaar fed Spacht who took the pass and fired a shot from 15 yards to beat Eastern Illinois goalkeeper, Jenny Williams, for her first goal of the season. With the goal, Spacht moved into second all-time with 38 career points and is now tied for second with 14 career goals.
DePaul (1-1-1) held the 1-0 lead throughout the first half and midway into the second period. In the 62nd minute, Michelle Steinhaus evened the score for the Panthers on a goal just inside the left post. The Blue Demons outshot the Panthers, 16-12, in the match.
Cara LaRocca finished the match with four saves in goal for the Blue Demons while DeBaene and VonderHaar attempted four shots apiece to lead the offensive attack. Eastern Illinois (1-1-1) and DePaul each took four corner kicks in the 110 minutes of play.
The Blue Demons continue the weekend road trip with a Sunday afternoon match at Drake. Kickoff in Des Moines, Iowa, is set for 1 p.m.
Match Notes: Lauren Spacht passed Christy Young's 37 points to move into second all-time… Spacht has totaled 38 points on 14 goals and 10 assists… Julianne Sitch (2002-05) leads all career categories with 90 points on 32 goals and 26 assists… Kelly DeBaene's ninth career assist moved her into a tie for fourth all-time with Jennifer Dyer and Young (1999-02)… the series now stands at 5-2-1 in favor of Eastern Illinois… in the last four meetings, the Blue Demons hold a 2-1-1 advantage.
