Dyer and VonderHaar Lead DePaul Past Southeast Missouri State

CHICAGO – Alissa VonderHaar scored two goals and Jennife Dyer totaled three assists to lead the DePaul women’s soccer team past visiting Southeast Missouri State on Friday afternoon. Lea Hill added the game-winner in the second half before the Redhawks scored twice to trim the deficit to just a single goal.
VonderHaar’s first goal came within the first five minutes as she knocked in a point-blank shot off a corner kick. Jennifer Dyer started the play with the corner kick where Jen Lee’s attempt was blocked and deflected over to VonderHaar. VonderHaar knocked it to the back of the net at 4:15 for the 1-0 Blue Demon advantage.
DePaul (2-2-1) struck again in the 18th minute as Dyer and VonderHaar teamed up for the second time. Dyer fed a streaking VonderHaar just outside the box where the sophomore took two dribbles and drilled a shot past Redhawk keeper Lindsay Pickering into the upper right corner of the goal.
Hill tickled the twine for the first time this season on a textbook goal by the Blue Demons. VonderHaar started the action in the center of the field with a serve over to Dyer on the right sideline. Dyer continued the play with a cross into the box on the left side of the goal where Hill headed it home at 60:03.
Southeast Missouri State (1-2-0) didn’t go away as they scored a pair of goals in less than 15 minutes to trim the DePaul lead to 3-2. Alaina Lacopo scored her first goal of the season in the 66th minute off an assist from Courtney Alexander. At 79:32, Margie Schaeffler connected with a header from a Megan McGrath corner kick to bring the Redhawks to within a single goal.
Neither team could find the net over the final 10 minutes with Lauren Spacht’s free kick nearly reaching the goal line. Spacht lined up the kick at the top of the penalty box, but Pickering wouldn’t let the ball through her hands on a diving stop.
The Redhawks took 18 shots, including 13 in the second half, while the Blue Demons attempted 17 shots. DePaul keeper Cara LaRocca finished with 10 saves while Pickering was credited with six stops. The three goals for the Blue Demons were the most scored this season.
DePaul travels to Northern Illinois on Sunday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. match before opening BIG EAST play next Friday against Notre Dame. The Blue Demons and Irish kick-off at 4 p.m. preceded by the DePaul men’s team and Pittsburgh at 12:30 p.m.
Match Notes: The two goals by Alissa VonderHaar marked the second multi-goal game of her career… she also found the net twice against Georgetown on Oct. 16, 2005… it is the first multi-goal match for a DePaul player this season… Dyer’s three assists put her in a tie for second all-time with Erin Walter (2002-05)… she now has a dozen career assists… Dyer is also tied for seventh all-time with 28 career points and tied for eighth with eight career goals… Lea Hill moved into a tie for fourth with 35 career points… she is now fifth all-time with 13 career goals and tied for fourth with nine career assists… Cara LaRocca has tallied at least 10 saves in three of the five matches this season… Friday was the first meeting between the two programs… the Blue Demons are 18-8-1 in the last three-plus seasons at Wish Field.
