Women's Tennis Opens Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional

CHICAGO The DePaul women’s tennis team enters the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships this week in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The six-day tournament features the top collegiate talent from the Midwest Region and begins Thursday at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
The Blue Demons open Thursday’s competition at 9 a.m. (CST) as sophomore Kirsten Gambrell and freshman Selma Salkovic enter the first round of qualifying singles play. Salkovic faces Michigan’s Lindsey Howard, while Gambrell takes on Tess Reddin of Cincinnati. Eight players from the 64-player qualifying bracket advance to the main draw, which begins play on Saturday. Senior Gergana Ganeva, junior Dunja Antunovic and freshman Katarina Milinkovic hold automatic bids for the main singles draw.
Doubles play opens on Friday with three Blue Demon pairs among the 64-team main draw. Ganeva and Milinkovic hold the No. 11 seed and face Iowa’s Kelcie Klockenga and Jessica Young in the first round. Bojana Murisic and Salkovic play Iowa’s No. 4 seeded pair, Alexis Dorr and Jacqueline Lee, while Antunovic and Gambrell take on Irina Kalashnikova and Veronika Leszayova of Drake.
Saturday brings the third round of doubles play in addition to the first and second rounds of the main singles draw. The doubles draw continues on Sunday and concludes on Monday with the championship match. The singles quarterfinals and semifinals run on Monday and the tournament wraps up with the singles championship on Tuesday.
The 2006 ITA Midwest Regional Championships saw Beatrix Csordas advance to the round of 16 in singles play. Antunovic enters the 2007 Championships with a FILA/ITA national ranking of No. 93.
