ANN ARBOR, Mich. Junior Dunja Antunovic recorded a pair of victories as the DePaul women’s tennis team opened main draw singles competition at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Saturday. Antunovic returns on Sunday for the singles round of 16 at the University of Michigan Varsity Tennis Center.
Antunovic posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Drake’s Veronika Leszayova in the first round and topped Marisa Lambropoulos of Illinois, 6-1, 6-4, in the second round. She faces Notre Dame’s Kali Krisik on Sunday. A victory would push Antunovic to the quarterfinals, where she would challenge the winner of Northwestern’s Georgia Rose versus Notre Dame’s Kelcie Tefft.
The main singles draw also saw senior Gergana Ganeva battle through three sets for a 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-1 win over Purdue’s Cigdem Duru in the first round. Ganeva exited the bracket with a 6-1, 7-6 (6) loss to Vanessa Frankowski of Eastern Michigan in the second round. Freshman Katarina Milinkovic suffered a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Notre Dame’s Katie Potts in the first round.
In addition to competing in the main singles draw, Ganeva and Milinkovic continued doubles play on Saturday. The Blue Demon duo marched through the first two rounds on Friday, but fell, 8-6, to Northwestern’s Nazlie Ghazal and Keri Robinson in Saturday’s round of 16.
The Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships resume on Sunday at 9 a.m. (CST).
