Women's Tennis Finishes Day One of WMU Super Challenge

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The DePaul women’s tennis team recorded five doubles victories and four singles wins as the Western Michigan Super Challenge opened on Friday. The Blue Demons knocked off opponents from Indiana, WMU, Wichita State and Yale at West Hills Athletic Club.
Freshmen Katarina Milinkovic and Selma Salkovic opened the doubles bracket with an 8-6 victory over Indiana’s Sigrid Fischer and Lindsey Stuckey before they notched an 8-2 win over WMU’s Priyanka Parekh and Emily Dudzik. The Blue Demon duo faces Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu of Wichita State in Saturday’s semifinals.
Seniors Gergana Ganeva and Anja Mihaldinec also advanced to the semifinal round of doubles play. They opened the draw with an 8-4 victory over Torrie Browning and Olga Elkin of Wichita State before they edged Indiana’s Maria Guerreiro and Brianna Williams, 9-8 (3). The semifinal round pits Ganeva and Mihaldinec against Wichita State’s Stephanie Dalmacio and Anna Egorova.
Doubles play also saw junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell pick up a first round victory. The DePaul pair topped Yumi Matsuto and Noriko Saruta, 8-3, before they fell to Hanisch and Lazaroiu, 8-2, in the second round.
In addition to doubles action, the Blue Demons competed in first-round singles play on Friday. Antunovic delivered a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Yale’s Stevi Petrelli in the Gold Draw and Mihaldinec posted a 6-3, 7-5 win over Elkin in the Black Draw. DePaul recorded two wins in the Silver Draw as Ganeva knocked off Matsuto, 6-1, 6-2, and Milinkovic topped Williams, 6-2, 6-4.
The WMU Super Challenge resumes on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (CST).
