CHICAGO -- On Thursday, Oct. 16, the DePaul Volleyball team will participate in Dig for the Cure, and raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The Blue Demons and BIG EAST Conference rival Notre Dame tangle at 7:30 p.m. at McGrath Arena.
Individuals can make a flat donation to the cause. The money raised will go directly to the local Susan G. Komen foundation office. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for breast cancer research.
DePaul joins more than 200 schools in 2008 that are participating in this sixth annual October event. Former Charlotte head volleyball coach Lisa Martson started the event in 2003 and in 2004 all Conference USA schools, including DePaul participated. Since 2003 schools have raised nearly $350,000.
The Komen for the Cure Foundation was established in 1982 by Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died from breast cancer at the age of 36. Today, the Foundation is an international organization with local affiliates in 125 cities and communities and events like the Komen Race for the Cure to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease.
The Foundation fulfills its mission through support of innovative breast cancer research grants, meritorious awards and educational, scientific and community outreach programs around the world. Together with its Affiliate Network, corporate partners and generous donors, the Komen Foundation has raised more than $1 billion for the fight against breast cancer. The five year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early, has risen from 74% in 1982 to 98% in 2008.
