CHICAGO The visiting USF Bulls scored the only goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute for a 1-0 win over DePaul at Wish Field. The Blue Demons totaled 11 shots in the 90 minutes of play, but were unable to convert any of the opportunities and find the back of the net.
Playing in a steady rain, the second half saw both teams trade attacks as the surface became slick. Morgan Celaya started a scoring chance for the Blue Demons in the 59th minute with a pass to Shannon Williams at the top of the 18-yard box. Williams fed Alyssa Wray, but her one-timer was saved by USF keeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi.
A minute later, USF nearly put the first goal in the net when Molly Stack fired a 25-yarder from the right flank. Her long-range shot skidded off the crossbar and out of bounds.
USF (6-3-3, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) broke through when Noelle Pineiro found Chelsea Klotz just outside the DePaul penalty box. Klotz took the pass and sent a low liner past a charging Kelsey Hoinkes for the eventual game-winner at 73:10.
The Blue Demons finished the match with 11 shots while USF was able to get off six attempts. Hoinkes totaled three saves and her counterpart, Lofton-Malachi, was credited with six stops.
DePaul (2-11-0, 0-5-0 BIG EAST) hits the road for the next four games starting on Oct. 10 at Villanova. Following that game, the Blue Demons play at Georgetown, Connecticut and Providence before returning to Wish Field the weekend of Oct. 24 against Seton Hall and Rutgers.
Game Notes: DePaul has dropped 13 of its last 14 BIG EAST matches... the Blue Demons were shutout for just the fifth time in 13 games this season... USF leads the series, 5-1-3.
