DePaul Drops Chicago

CHICAGO DePaul wrapped up the exhibition portion of the preseason with a 107-51 win over the University of Chicago. Deirdre Naughton led six players in double-figures with 21 points.
The Blue Demons put the game away from the first whistle by scoring the first 17 points of the game. Natasha Williams and Keisha Hampton scored on DePaul’s first two possessions before Williams added two more buckets in the paint for a 7-0 advantage less than two minutes into the action.
Karly Kasper got the Maroons on the board with a free throw at 14:55. Chicago managed just two field goals in the first half while going 18-for-20 from the free throw line. DePaul led by as many as 38 points in the first half when Erin Cattell converted a lay-up just before halftime. The Blue Demons held a 58-22 lead at intermission.
A three-pointer from Sam Quigley put the Blue Demons up, 74-27, with just over 12 minutes left in the game. Courtney Webb’s three with 2:30 pushed DePaul over the century mark and a 101-49 lead.
Naughton went 7-of-11 from the field with two three-pointers and added seven assists to lead the Blue Demons. Williams finished the evening with 17 points, seven rebounds while Quigley added 13 and five assists. Felicia Chester totaled 12 points and seven boards and freshmen Hampton and Webb scored 11 points apiece. Rachel Pierson grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with six points.
Chicago was led by Alex Leach with 14 points. The Maroons were held to just a team field goal percentage of .240, but they went 26-for-33 from the free throw line. DePaul went 7-of-15 from behind the arc and 18-for-24 from the free throw line.
The Blue Demons open the 2008-09 campaign next weekend at the Basketball Travelers Tip-Off Classic in Albuquerque, N.M. DePaul faces Idaho State on Saturday before playing Alcorn State on Sunday and host New Mexico on Monday. Monday’s game will be nationally televised on the Mountain West Sports Network.
