Women's Tennis Dominates in BIG EAST Championship Opener

TAMPA, Fla. The No. 66 DePaul women’s tennis team opened the 2008 BIG EAST Tennis Championships on Thursday with a 4-0 shutout over Georgetown. The No. 5 seed Blue Demons took the doubles point before clinching the win with three singles victories over the No. 12 seed Hoyas at the USF Varsity Courts. DePaul advances to Friday’s quarterfinals to face No. 4 seed Marquette.
The Blue Demons opened the dual by making quick work of doubles play. Senior Beatrix Csordas and freshman Selma Salkovic notched an 8-0 shutout over Stephanie Cohen and Liz Winokur in the top match, while seniors Gergana Ganeva and Anja Mihaldinec recorded an 8-2 victory over Maxi Thiels and Caroline Kuehn in the No. 3 match.
Singles competitions saw DePaul clinch the dual with dominant victories in the top three matches. Junior Dunja Antunovic delivered a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Cohen at No. 1 singles and Ganeva topped Courtney Olsen, 6-0, 6-2, in the No. 2 match. Salkovic cruised past Winokur with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles.
DePaul (17-6, 6-2 BIG EAST) led Georgetown at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles before the contest was decided.
The Blue Demons challenge Marquette tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CST) on the USF Varsity Courts. The winner advances to Saturday’s semifinals to face the winner of top-seed Notre Dame versus No. 8 seed Rutgers.
