Women's Tennis Earns Fourth Place at BIG EAST Championship

TAMPA, Fla. The DePaul women’s tennis team closed out the BIG EAST Conference Championship on Sunday with a 4-2 loss to Louisville in the third-place dual. The No. 5 seed Blue Demons recorded a pair of singles victories, but the No. 2 seed Cardinals won the doubles point and three singles matches at the USF Varsity Courts.
DePaul posted a victory in the No. 2 doubles match, however Louisville clinched the point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Junior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Kirsten Gambrell defeated Lauren Imre and Robyn White at No. 2 doubles. Senior Beatrix Csordas and freshman Selma Salkovic suffered an 8-4 loss to Biana Gorbea and Natalia Baez in the top match, while seniors Gergana Ganeva and Anja Mihaldinec fell, 8-3, to Lindsey Jones and Jo-Ann Van Aerde at No. 3.
Singles competition saw the Blue Demons take the top two matches. Antunovic gave DePaul a win at No. 1 when she topped Imre, 7-6 (3), 6-3. Ganeva rolled past Jones at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-0 triumph.
Louisville (17-7) clinched the dual with wins at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Freshman Katarina Milinkovic dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision to Baez in the No. 4 match, while Csordas fell, 6-4, 6-1, to White at No. 5. Mihaldinec suffered a 6-2, (ret.), loss to Van Aerde in the No. 6 match.
DePaul (18-8, 7-4 BIG EAST) exits the BIG EAST Championship with fourth-place honors. Top seed Notre Dame won the 2008 title with a 4-1 victory over No. 3 seed USF in the Championship match.
