CHICAGO The DePaul women’s tennis team launches its fall season this weekend at the Bronco Invitational. The three-day tournament runs Friday through Sunday at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
In addition to the hosting Broncos, the Blue Demons join a field of competition from Eastern Michigan, Indiana State, Purdue, UIC, and BIG EAST Conference rivals Marquette and West Virginia. The tournament features a bracket-style format with four singles flights as well as four doubles flights.
Head coach Mark Ardizzone begins his 13th season with DePaul following a 2007-08 campaign that landed the Blue Demons on the final ITA rankings in the No. 61 spot. The team posted an overall record of 18-8 with a fourth place finish at the BIG EAST Championship.
Senior Dunja Antunovic and sophomore Selma Salkovich lead this year’s team with a combined 48 singles victories during the 2007-08 season. In addition, Antunovic was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team for her three victories during the event.
Junior Kristen Gambrell and Sophomore Katarina Milinkovic close out the returning class for DePaul. Gambrell posted 28 doubles and 24 singles victories, while Milinkovic boasted a 20-12 singles record.
Ardizzone welcomes newcomers Cali Gustafson, Gia McKnight, Anna Redecsi, and Sandra Zmak to his 2008-09 roster. Although it will be first time for Redecsi and Zmak to suit up in a Blue Demons’ uniform, it is not their first time playing at the collegiate level. Redecsi joins DePaul after a successful campaign at Clayton State, while Zmak spent two years at New Mexico.
Tournament play begins at 8 a.m. (CST) on Friday morning at the Sorenson Courts near WMU’s campus.
