Blue Demons Fall to Bearcats

CHICAGO Michelle Scandora netted her second goal of the season, but the visiting Cincinnati Bearcats found the net twice for a 2-1 decision over DePaul at Wish Field on Friday. Scandora pulled to Blue Demons to within a goal, but DePaul was unable to score the tying goal.
The first half played even with both sides taking five shots each. Kelsey Hoinkes made diving save on a shot by Cincinnati’s Melissa Bigg. Bigg took pass from Jenn Johannigman just inside 18-yard box and tried to go to the back post, but Hoinkes was there with a dive to her left to knock it away.
Bigg came through just before halftime for Cincinnati (5-4-0, 1-1-0 BIG EAST) as she headed in a cross from the right flank by Sydney Barker at 37:35. The Bearcats added a second goal within the first 10 minutes of the second half as Kristin May floated a 23-yarder over Kelsey Hoinkes. Her shot from the left side tucked just inside the upper right corner in the 54th minute.
DePaul (2-8-0, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) didn’t back down as they cut the deficit in half less then 10 minutes later when Scandora connected on a header at 60:48. Tara Strickland started the play on corner kick and found Scandora in the center of the box. Scandora sent the serve to the upper-half for her second goal of the season. Strickland’s assist was the team-high third for the sophomore.
With the clock winding down, Arianna Foster’s bid for the equalizer was stopped by Cincinnati’s Andrea Kaminski. Foster took a pass and dribbled to the right side and fired a line drive, but Kaminksi made the stop. Hoinkes totaled five saves while Kaminski was credited with four stops.
The Blue Demons finished the game with six corner kicks while the Bearcats created three corner kick chances.
DePaul concludes the weekend on the road as they travel to Louisville. Kickoff on Sunday afternoon is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.
Game Notes: Ten of DePaul’s 11 starters were freshmen or sophomores... the Blue Demons have totaled 12 goals in 10 games this season after scoring 18 in 19 matches a year ago... Cincinnati leads the series, 11-1-1.
