Double Digit Victories on Day 1

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The DePaul women’s tennis team opened their 2008-09 season with 10 singles victories and 3 doubles wins as the Bronco Invitational opened on Friday. The Blue Demons knocked off opponents from Purdue, UIC, and Western Michigan as well as BIG EAST Conference rivals West Virginia and Marquette on the Sorenson Courts at WMU.
Logging perfect records in the first two rounds of singles action were Katarina Milinkovic, Gia McKnight, Kirsten Gambrell, and Sandra Zmak.
In the Black Flight, Milinkovic defeated Illinca Cristescu of UIC, 6-2, 6-3, before knocking off Purdue’s Stephanie Wooten, 6-1, 6-4. Selma Salkovic, who also represented DePaul in the Black Flight, recorded a victory over Michelle Sammons of Purdue, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9). She fell to Indiana State’s Sarah Meghoufel after another grueling three-set match, 2-6, 6-3, 0-1 (6).
McKnight and Gambrell went a perfect 4-0 in the Gold Flight. With a score of 6-0, 6-2, McKnight topped West Virginia’s Monique Burton after defeating Gillian Hush of Marquette 6-3, 6-1. Gambrell was evenly matched against Purdue’s Remi Martin, 7-5, 5-7, before pulling out the victory in the third set (5). Persevering through another three set match, she knocked off Ashley Moccia of Western Michigan, 0-6, 6-0, 1-0 (6).
Representing the Brown Flight for the Blue Demons, Zmak beat Jenna Reisch of UIC, 6-1, 6-2, and Marquette’s Elly Strother. Cali Gustafson knocked off West Virginia’s Milica Pantovic, 7-5, 6-3, before bowing out to Maggie Wilson of Marquette, 6-3, 3-6, 0-1 (5).
In doubles bracket action, Salkovic teamed up with Zmak to defeat Western Michigan’s sister duo of Ashley and Amanda Moccia, 8-3. Recording their first doubles victory of the season was McKnight and Milinkovic, who topped Paola Calderon and Christina Ruiz, 8-4.
The round robin White Flight of doubles featured Gambrell and Gustafson winning 8-5 against the West Virginia team of Pantovic and Ashley Pilsbury.
The Blue Demons went 6-1 against BIG East opponents in their first outing of the season. Overall, the team posted a singles record of 10-2, while going undefeated (3-0) in doubles matches.
The Bronco Invitational resumes on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (CST).
