Cross Country Teams Compete at the Fordham Fiasco

Bronx, N.Y. - Getting out before the remnants of Tropical Storm Hanna hit the New York City area, the DePaul men’s and women’s cross country teams raced their way to fourth and sixth place finishes at the Fordham Fiasco in VanCortlandt Park. Freshman Matthew Graham led the way for the Blue Demon men with a second place finish in the 8K, while sophomore Mary Cate Quiett paced the women in the 5K, placing 13th.
Graham crossed the line with a time of 26:43.34 for his second consecutive top-five finish. Jakub Kolacz followed in 10th place at 27:51.58. Luke Rygh finished in 21st place with a time of 27:51.58 just ahead of Rob Morgan, who ran for 23rd in a time of 27:54.28. Ryan Solomon closed out the Blue Demons’ top-five finishers as he placed 55th with a time of 28:53.73.
Quiett paced the women’s team for the first time this season with a time of 19:33.88. Terah Cheatham placed 22nd with a time of 19:50.69. Kelly Pickering crossed the line in 20:14.93 for 39th followed by Stephanie Hughes’ 55th place finish in 20:42.55. Rounding out the top-five finisher for the women was Erin Lakie with a 64th place finish in a time of 20:57.16.
The men’s team combined for a score of 103 in a field of 16 squads, edging out fifth place finisher and BIG EAST Conference rival Pittsburgh by 26 points. Navy topped the standings with a score of 29.
The Blue Demon women posted a total score of 170 in a field of 20 squads, placing three spots ahead of Pittsburgh. Navy also placed first on the women’s side with a score of 26.
A select group of Blue Demons stayed in Chicago on Saturday to race at North Park’s Ted Hedstrand Invitational. Stacy Schmitz placed 12th in the women’s 3.25-mile race with a time of 22:44, while Brian Begalke finished 19th on the men’s 5.25-mile course with a time of 29:40. The women's team came in third, while the men placed fifth.
DePaul returns to action on Friday, September 19 at the National Catholic Championships in Notre Dame, Indiana.
