EVANSTON, Ill. - DePaul senior Anna Redecsi made Blue Demon tennis history in the morning and added her name to DePaul's short list of ITA Midwest Regional Singles semifinalist in the afternoon.
Redecsi claimed the doubles title along with her partner Selma Salkovic and then represented DePaul in the main singles draw of the ITA Midwest Regional on Monday at Northwestern's Combe Indoor Tennis Center. The senior became the second Blue Demon to reach the semifinals of the regional tournament with a win over No. 40 Samantha Murray in her first singles match of the day.
"Anna proved that she is one of the elite players in the Midwest," DePaul head coach Mark Ardizzone said. "To have a tournament like that in both singles and doubles is a special performance."
Redecsi had an hour and a half break before battling Murray for a chance to play in the semifinals in the afternoon.
"Anna was on an emotional high from winning the doubles which carried over to singles play. Sam Murray is a fighter and came at her," Ardizzone said following the quarterfinal match. "Where Anna showed her strength is when she fought back after losing the first set and won the last two. She could have went away and didn't.
Murray took the first set 7-6, but Redecsi responded and dominated the final two sets 6-3, 6-1 to move to the semifinals and play her third match of the day.
Redecsi tangled with a familiar face in Kristy Frilling from Notre Dame. Frilling, who is ranked No. 20, also competed in the doubles final in the morning.
With big points won on each side of the net and each player fighting to move on, Frilling came out on top with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
"Anna performance today was a true credit to Patricia Dietz our strength and conditioning coach," Adrizzone added. "Patricia has made us fitter, stronger and faster."
While Redecsi and Salkovic compete at the ITA National Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 5-8 at Yale University, the rest of the squad will participate at the Bronco Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich. Nov., 6-8.
