CHICAGO - DePaul women's tennis coach Mark Ardizzone announced today that Kelsey Lawson and Christiana Raymond have signed a National Letter of Intent and will play tennis at DePaul beginning in the 2010-11 season.
"We are really excited to add Kelsey and Christiana to our DePaul family," Ardizzone said of his two signees. "Both are great players and what is more important is that they both want to get even better. When they were here on their visits I could tell that they wanted to join in our practices right then and there.
"Both Kelsey and Christiana have very supportive families and DePaul is lucky and proud to have them become part of our program. Getting the top seniors from both the state of Ohio and Arizona is really a boost and it will help us reach our program's goals."
Lawson is the defending Arizona 5A-1 singles champion from Tempe Corona del Sol High School. On the national scene, Lawson won the 2008 USTA Central Arizona Player of the Year award and participated at the Girls 18 National Clay Court Championships and at the Southwest Section team of the Girls 18 Team National Championship.
Raymond hails from the Columbus Academy where she helped the Vikings to the school's first ever DII state title in 2008. As a freshman she won the singles title and then as a junior, Raymond and her doubles partner claimed the state's doubles crown. Raymond only played her freshman and junior seasons while at Columbus Academy, but she left her mark - an undefeated one. As the top ranked senior in the state of Ohio, Raymond posted a 60-24 record at the junior level.
The Blue Demons had a successful fall campaign as the team totaled 35 singles and 16 doubles victories while Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic reached the quarterfinals of the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship after winning the Midwest Regional. DePaul returns to the court in January when it travels to Evanston for the Northwestern Invitational Jan. 15-17.
