PROVIDENCE, R.I. - If only DePaul could have forced another overtime game.
Michelle Scandora scored a late goal, but the Blue Demons couldn't find one more Friday in a 2-1 BIG EAST Conference loss to Providence that snapped their five-game winning streak.
DePaul has won a school-record four overtime matches this season---with all four coming in the last six games.
"Michelle's goal came after a corner kick with everybody scrambling around," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "She did a really good job of scrapping around, keeping it in the box and getting on the end of it.
"The whole team was energized, but there was only about six minutes left. We tried to create some more chances but weren't successful."
Scandora's first goal of the season came after Providence (9-4-2, 3-3-2 in the BIG EAST) had gone ahead 2-0 on a goal by Courtney Collins in the 77th minute.
DePaul (10-5-2, 5-3-0) didn't come out with its usual high energy level and got burned in the seventh minute on a header by Providence star Amanda Webster---her seventh goal of the season.
"That was a soft goal our team gave up," Chastain said. "They didn't execute the defense that we asked the group to do.
"Our whole team has to do a better job of being ready to play from the opening whistle."
DePaul did have two other good opportunities before Scandora scored in the 84th minute.
Tara Strickland got off a shot in the first half that was saved by Providence goalkeeper Jill Schott. In the second half, Callie Hemming ripped one off the post.
"We can't use the excuse that we lost because we're on the road," said Chastain about DePaul's first away game in three weeks. "We prepare for a game the same way whether we're home or away.
"We weren't ready to play from the beginning."
Knowing how Chastain operates, her team will be more than ready for the noon match Sunday at Connecticut.
"We will regroup and be ready for Sunday," Chastain said. "We can still get some points out of the weekend."
