LOS ANGELES - Competing at the invitational only, Riviera/ITA All-American Tournament means that you are one of the best collegiate tennis players in the country; it also means that you will face the best in the country.
DePaul senior Selma Salkovic was honored to be invited and did not fear her prequalifying Nebraska opponent - Patricia Veresova even though the sophomore was once ranked as one of the top 530 women's tennis players in the world.
Playing on a tennis stage that Blue Demon head coach Mark Ardizzone said, "all of the invited players were really, really good," Salkovic entered the match confident and did not allow Veresova's past rankings intimidate her.
In the first set, both players held their serves until Veresova broke Salkovic's serve with a couple of great shots and took a 5-3 lead. With momentum on her side, Veresova took the first set 6-3.
After regrouping, Salkovic took an early 2-0 advantage in the second set; but Veresova fought back and regained her momentum and just like in the first set -- won, 6-3.
Salkovic was making her second appearance at the Riveria/ITA All-American, the DePaul senior was invited in 2009 with her doubles partner Anna Redecsi, but her 2010 appearance was her first as a singles player.
Salkovic rejoins the Blue Demons next weekend at the Northwestern Wildcat Invitational. The tournament runs Oct. 8-10 in Evanston.
