DePaul Falls on Penalty Kick

WASHINGTON, D.C. - If only there was a way to erase that one mistake.
But a foul in the penalty box early in the second half resulted in a Georgetown penalty-kick goal as DePaul fell 1-0 Friday at North Kehoe Field.
Georgetown (13-5-0, 7-3-0 in the BIG EAST Conference) clinched second place in the National Division with the Blue Demons remaining in third.
DePaul (10-7-2, 5-5-0) can lock up third place with a victory at Villanova on Sunday.
"From my perspective, I thought it was a questionable call," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "It looked like the Georgetown player (Camille Trujillo) slipped. But she did a good job of drawing the foul.
"It is what it is."
Hoyas' star Ingrid Wells took the penalty kick and scored her eighth goal of the season in the 47th minute.
"Our team did a really good job in the second half of keeping the ball and putting Georgetown under pressure," Chastain said. "We made them defend on five set pieces."
Morgan Celaya and Tara Strickland each fired a shot from the top of the box with Georgetown goalkeeper Jackie DesJardin making a save on Strickland's attempt.
In the 85th minute, Casey Mercurio's attempt to tie the match was high.
"Outside of the penalty kick, our back line did an outstanding job of not letting Georgetown get many dangerous chances," Chastain said. "Georgetown is the highest-scoring team in the BIG EAST---they're really good.
"In the first half, it took us a while to get used to their speed of play. We made adjustments that worked in the second half.
"I thought Kelly Blumberg played great today. She did a wonderful job of defending Georgetown's most special player (Wells) and in connecting with the ball."
Chastain also had praise for a key reserve. "Morgan Celaya came off the bench and made an impact on the game," Chastain said. "It's really important at the end of a season to see people come in and contribute right away.
"We are going to need performances like Morgan's on Sunday against Villanova and competing in the BIG EAST playoffs."
In her third start of the season, DePaul goalkeeper Kelsey Hoinkes made five saves and helped contain the potent Hoyas attack. It was the senior's first start since Oct. 3.
NOTES: Rutgers sits in fourth place of the National Division with 10 points and Louisville is fifth with nine... Rutgers is home against Cincinnati (2-7-0 in the BIG EAST) Friday night while Louisville plays at Seton Hall (2-6-1)... a loss or tie by both teams would clinch third place for DePaul (15 points)... if the Blue Demons wind up as the No. 3 seed in the National Division, they would travel to face the No. 2 seed in the American Division in the BIG EAST quarterfinals on Halloween (Oct. 31)... West Virginia has clinched second place in the American Division with 22 points... this was Hoinkes's first loss of the year after winning 2-1 at Cincinnati on Sept. 26 and 2-1 over Syracuse on Oct. 3... Georgetown outshot DePaul 12-6 and had five shots on goal to three for the visiting team... Strickland led the Blue Demons with three shots and two shots on goal... Arianna Foster had one shot on goal and Mercurio and Celaya had one shot apiece... for the first time this season, DePaul has lost three in a row... Mercurio, Blumberg, Lauren Pagone, Rebekah Roller, Kylie Nordness, Michelle Scandora and Beth Perry played the entire 90 minutes.
