
Blue Demons Drop BIG EAST Road Match

TAMPA, Fla. - After winning the first set at USF on Sunday afternoon, the DePaul volleyball team found themselves on the short end of a 3-1 (11-25, 27-25, 25-16, 25-19) decision. The loss drops DePaul to 1-16 overall and 0-4 in BIG EAST play while USF improves to 7-8 overall and 3-1 in league action.
The Blue Demons dominated the first set posting the largest margin of victory in a set this season by winning 25-11. Holding an early 8-5 lead, the Blue Demons scored five straight points to take a 13-5 advantage. USF answered with three consecutive points to move to within five at 13-8 before a 9-1 run opened up a 22-9 lead for DePaul.
The second set went back-and-forth before USF prevailed with a 27-25 decision to even the match at 1-1. USF jumped to a 10-3 lead and DePaul trailed by as many as nine points on two occasions. However, the Blue Demons didn't go away easily as they came all the way back to tie the set at 24-24 and 25-25 before the Bulls were able to reel off two straight points for the two-point win.
The third and fourth sets saw the Bulls take early leads again. Unlike the second set, USF held off DePaul each time to win the match with scores of 25-16 and 25-19.
Chelsea Kirkpatrick led DePaul with nine kills while Kate Letcher added seven kills. Katherine Knutson tallied 20 digs and Samantha Geiger totaled 27 assists for the Blue Demons.
DePaul is in the midst of five straight road matches and continues the time away from McGrath Arena next weekend at Cincinnati and Louisville. The Blue Demons play at Cincinnati on Friday night before heading to Louisville on Sunday afternoon.
