
DePaul Struggles Against St. John's

CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team dropped its last home match of the season 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-13) to St. John's on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Demons fall to 4-23 and 1-10 in the BIG EAST Conference, while the Red Storm improve to 16-11 and 3-7 in conference action.
St. John's was impressive on the attack and committed zero attack errors in the first set. The Red Storm used a .645 (20-0-31) to claim the first set 25-16.
The score swung back forth in the opening moments of the second set. With the score knotted at six, the Red Storm went on a 6-2 run that forced DePaul to take an early timeout. DePaul came out of the timeout and scored four quick points, St. John's was forced to use a timeout of its own. The Blue Demons continued to keep the pressure on St. Johns and used Katherine Knutson's defensive support to win the set 25-19.
Rachel Aumann's .714 (5-0-7) attack percentage in the third set allowed the Blue Demons to win 25-18. Senior Kate Letcher served for five straight points to close the frame.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the fourth set. But, Chelsea Kirkpatrick's four kills in the set would keep the Blue Demons close. However, St. John's .360 attack percentage propelled them past DePaul and gave them a 25-21 fourth set victory.
DePaul scored the first three points of the fifth set but St. John's scored the last four. DePaul had a 12-9 lead late in the fifth but could not hold off the Red Storm. St. John's used a late 6-1 run to win the set 15-13.
The Blue Demons next match will be Sunday, Nov. 7 against Villanova.
