CHICAGO - Following a 114-81 win over Chicago State to open the season Sunday night at McGrath Arena, the DePaul Blue Demons play their first game of the 2010-11 campaign at Allstate Arena on Tuesday. The Rosemont opener sees the Western Carolina Catamounts visiting for a 7:30 p.m. start at Allstate Arena.
The regular-season opener can be seen online on BlueTube at www.depaulbluedemons.com. DePaul's radio duo of Zach Zaidman (play-by-play) and Laurence Holmes (analyst) will call all the action on the 50,000-watt WSCR "The Score" (670 AM) reaching 38 states and Canada. DePaul enters the game at 1-0 following the win over Chicago State while Western Carolina is 0-1 after an 87-64 loss at Clemson on Nov. 12. Tuesday's action marks the start of the 31st season of DePaul basketball at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons hold an all-time record of 302-122 (.712) in suburban Rosemont.
Following the Western Carolina game, the Blue Demons jump into Autumn quarter finals and don't play until a Thanksgiving Day matchup against Oklahoma State in the 76 Classic. The Blue Demons and Cowboys square off at 3:30 p.m. CT in Anaheim, Calif., in a game that can be seen on ESPN2.
Season-Opening Notes: Sunday evening at McGrath Arena saw the start of the 88th season of DePaul basketball... with the 114-81 win over Chicago State, the Blue Demons are 77-11 all-time in the first game... DePaul has won three straight season openers after a three-game losing streak in first games from 2005-08... a year ago, DePaul knocked off Columbia, 59-53, at Allstate Arena... Sunday's game was the second all-time season opener at McGrath Arena for the Blue Demons... DePaul defeated Albany, 75-64, on Nov. 17, 2008.
Home-Opener Notes: DePaul is now 81-7 all-time in the first home game of the season... the Blue Demons have won 22 of the last 23 and 70 of their last 72 home openers... the last loss in the home-opening game of the season was a 75-60 defeat against Bradley on Nov. 19, 2005... last season, the Blue Demons defeated Columbia, 59-53, at Allstate Arena on Nov. 17... the Nov. 14 date snapped a four-year streak of playing DePaul's first home game on Nov. 17.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,366-837 (.620) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 518 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons have won four of their first five games in two straight seasons... DePaul is 3-0 all-time in games at McGrath Arena... the Blue Demons host Ball State at McGrath Arena on Dec. 11.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 114-81 win against Chicago State on Nov. 14:
- Krys Faber recorded the first points of the Oliver Purnell era with dunk at the 19:39 mark of the first half.
- The Blue Demons are now 77-11 all-time in season openers... DePaul has won three straight first games.
- In home openers, DePaul is now 81-7 all-time with wins in 22 of the last 23 and 70 of the last 72 first home games.
- At McGrath Arena, DePaul is now 3-0 all-time and 2-0 all-time when starting the season at McGrath Arena.
- DePaul scored at least 100 points for the first time since a 108-69 victory over Syracuse on Mar. 2, 2006... the Blue Demons are now 69-0 all-time when scoring 100 points... the 59 points in the first half were the most in the opening period since the start of the 2001-02 season.
- The 114 points are the most in game since a 114-69 win at American-Puerto Rico on Nov. 25, 1999 in the San Juan Shootout.
- DePaul has scored at least 114 points in 12 games all-time.
- The win snapped a 12-game losing streak in regular-season games dating back to last season... DePaul last regular-season win prior to Sunday was a 51-50 win over Marquette on Jan. 20, 2010.
- Devin Hill moved into sole possession of 15th on DePaul's all-time blocked shots chart... with his three blocks, he finished the game with 67 career rejections.
- Head coach Tracy Dildy returned to Lincoln Park where he was an assistant coach from 1998-02.
- Sunday was the ninth meeting between the two programs... DePaul leads the series, 9-0... all nine games have been played at DePaul.
- The 114 are the most scored by the Blue Demons against the Cougars in the series... DePaul also scored 110 in Nov. 1993, 104 in Dec. 1999 and 103 in Dec. 1992.
Five for 400: Oliver Purnell has compiled nearly 400 victories in his 23 seasons as a NCAA Division I head coach at Radford (1988-91), Old Dominion (1991-94), Dayton (1994-03) and Clemson (2003-10). He is in his first season at DePaul with a career record of 395-279 and needs just five victories to reach the 400-win plateau. He has recorded a milestone win at each stop of his coaching career with his first victory at Radford, his 100th win at Old Dominion, his 200th victory at Dayton and win No. 300 was with Clemson.
Three Decades in Rosemont: DePaul enters its 31st season in 2010-11 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The Blue Demons are 302-122 (.712) all-time in Rosemont. DePaul University played its first season at the then-named Rosemont Horizon in 1980. The Blue Demons debuted in Rosemont with a 74-56 win over Gonzaga and John Stockton on Dec. 1, 1980.
