CHICAGO- The DePaul men's and women's cross country teams begin their 2010 season hosting the Vincentian Cup Invitational on Saturday. The meet, at Channel Runne Park in Lincolnwood, Ill., will bring together Niagara, St. John's and DePaul, the three Vincentian universities in the United States, and Loyola-Chicago. Racing begins at 9:30 a.m. with a women's 4K run and concludes with a four-mile men's run.
The Vincentian Cup Invitational looks to celebrate spirituality through athletics by honoring the 350th anniversary of the deaths of St. Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac. St Vincent de Paul and St. Louise de Marillac devoted their lives to helping the less fortunate.
DePaul coach Pat Savage, now in his fifth season, is impressed with his team's hard work and has high expectations. "We go into every meet hoping that we can win on both the men's and women's side," said coach Savage.
The Blue Demons men return seven runners, led by Matthew Graham, who is coming off a great sophomore season. Graham won every race of the 2009 regular season, was named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week twice and achieved All-Conference honors placing 14th at the BIG EAST Championship.
The DePaul women return 10, with leadership coming from seniors Mary Cate Quiett and Stephanie Hughes and junior Toni Salvatore. Quiett scored team points in all seven races in 2009 while Hughes and Salvatore were able to score points in six.
The Vincentian Cup Invitational is the first of five regular-season meets for the Blue Demons.
