Blue Demons Fall in Straight Sets

DEKALB, Ill.-The DePaul volleyball team lost to Northern Illinois 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) on Tuesday, Sept. 21. Senior Kate Letcher had a team high .429 (3-0-7) and freshman Chelsea Kirkpatrick led the team with six kills.
Northern Illinois started the first set on a 14-5 run. DePaul countered with a 12-4 run that was sparked by two Northern Illinois attack errors. The run brought the Blue Demons within one. However, Northern Illinois's Allison McGlaughlin had three big kills that pushed the Huskies to a 25-20 first set win.
DePaul came out with more energy in the second set Letcher placed a kill to the back left corner to tie it at four and the next play Letcher combined with Kyndell Highland for a block to give DePaul its first lead of the match. The momentum would quickly change, and Northern Illinois went on a 14-4 run. The run was halted by back to back kills, one coming from Anastasiya Shutava and one coming from Sammy Geiger. Illinois State rallied and would end the set at 25-16.
Nothern Illinois started the third set on a 13-3 run. The Blue Demons continued to fight for every point but could not overcome the Huskies early lead. Northern Illinois won the set 25-14.
The Blue Demons return to the court and begin there BIG EAST season on Saturday Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. when they play Pittsburgh.
