
DePaul Volleyball Opens League Play With a 3-1 Loss

CHICAGO- The DePaul Volleyball team opened its BIG EAST Conference portion of the season against Pittsburgh today a McGrath Arena. Despite Jumping to a 1-0 lead after the first set, the Blue Demons fell to the Panthers 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 22-25, 22-25), and drop to an overall record of 1-13 (0-1 BIG EAST)
Kate Letcher and Chelsea Kirkpatrick both had 12 kills and Sammy Geiger led the team with a .625 (6-1-8) attack percentage and had 38 assists.
The Blue Demons and the Panthers started the first set trading points to a 3-3 tie. The Blue Demons would then go on a 7-2 run and force Pittsburgh to use a timeout. Pittsburgh would then counter with an 8-3 run that tied the set at 13. DePaul then used its first timeout. Anastasiya Shutava sparked another DePaul run of 7-3 and forced Pittsburgh to use its second timeout, with a kill to the back right corner. The Blue Demons came out of the timeout focused and would go on to win the set 25-19.
Kirkpatrick led the Blue Demons with four kills in the second set. However, Pittsburgh used a .412 (15-1-34) attack percentage to take the second set 25-15.
The third set started with DePaul jumping to an early 4-1 lead. Pittsburgh would fight back into the set and trade points to a 14-14 tie. The Panthers won the next two points and forced the Blue Demons to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, Kirkpatrick placed a kill to the back left corner. Both teams battled for the rest of the set, but Pittsburgh walked away with a 25-22 win.
Letcher would lead the Blue Demons with a .833 (5-0-6) attack percentage in the fourth set. DePaul jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the fourth set. The Panthers fought back into the match. With the score tied at 17, DePaul would score three quick points to force Pittsburgh to use a timeout. Out of the timeout the Panther went on a 6-2 run to close the set at 25-22.
BIG EAST action continues this Sunday, at McGrath Arena, when DePaul faces West Virginia at 2 p.m.
Notes: Katherine Knutson had double digit digs for the ninth match this season… Pittsburgh leads the all time series 8-0… the Blue Demons are 0-6 in four game matches.
