CHICAGO- The DePaul volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (33-31, 25-21, 25-16) BIG EAST Conference match to West Virginia, Sunday at McGrath Arena. The Blue Demons fall to 1-14 and 0-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Mountaineers improve to 11-6 and 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
Chelsea Kirkpatrick led the Blue Demons with 12 kills and Kyndell Highland had a team high attack percentage of .292 (10-3-24).
The score went back and forth, neither team could gain a lead of more than two in a first set that went to extra points. There were 22 ties in the set the last one coming at 31-31. Kirkpatrick led the Blue Demons with 7 kills in the set. West Virginia won the set 33-31.
In the second set, West Virginia jumped out to a 10-6 advantage. DePaul hung close and tied the set at 18 forcing the Mountaineers to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Mountaineers went on a 7-3 run to take a 2-0 lead going into the break.
Momentum favored West Virginia in the third set, as the Mountaineer's used a .344 (16-5-32) attack percentage to win the third set 25-16.
Sammy Geiger managed the offense with 34 assists. In addition to Kirkpatricks 12 kills, Kyndell Highland terminated the ball on 10 occasions while freshman Anastasiya Shutava contributed nine kills.
The Blue Demons hit the road next weekend for a Friday evening match versus Georgetown at 6 p.m. and then play USF on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Notes: Katherine Knutson has had 10 matches with double digit digs… West Virginia leads the all time series 5-2.
