CINCINNATI - Once again, DePaul struck gold with Callie Hemming.
Hemming's golden goal in overtime put the Midas touch on a 2-1 comeback victory over Cincinnati Sunday for the Blue Demons' first win in BIG EAST Conference play.
This is the same Callie Hemming who scored a golden goal in last year's 2-1, double-overtime victory over No. 22 Georgetown that clinched DePaul's first appearance in the BIG EAST Championship tournament.
This time, Hemming's shining moment helped turn around a team that had surrendered a late one-goal lead in a 2-1 loss to No. 24/18 Louisville on Friday.
"Ashleigh Goddard flicked their goal kick and there was a scramble in front of the net," said Hemming as she set the scene for her second game-winning goal of the season that came in the 98th minute. "I love going near post.
"Once we're in the box, Erin (DePaul coach Erin Chastain) tells us to shoot to score. I want to focus in the box and take care of my goal chances.
"That's something we did not do on Friday."
DePaul (6-4-2, 1-2-0 in the BIG EAST) fell behind 1-0 when Kendall Loggins scored off an assist from Brooke Eberly in the 58th minute for Cincinnati (6-4-1, 0-3-0).
That's when Tara Strickland went to work, firing off six shots in a 27-minute span.
Shot No. 6 came off a nice pass from Arianna Foster, and the left-footed drive curved right past Bearcat goalkeeper Ashley Daniels.
"Tara had a lot of shots for us (10) and hit that one at the near post," Chastain said. "She played really well for us.
"We've been challenging Tara to lift her game. On Sunday, she responded to that challenge very well."
Hemming realized the urgency of wiping away the memory of Friday's disappointment.
"This was a big win to get us going in the right direction again," said Hemming, who leads the Blue Demons with four goals. "Friday's loss left a bad taste in our mouth. We all know we should have won that game.
"It's still a little bitter. But now we can look ahead to a stretch of four-straight games at home."
Kelsey Hoinkes (three saves) got her first start in goal since 2008 and came away with the win.
"We let in two soft goals on Friday and decided to make a change" Chastain said. "Kelsey stepped in and did a nice job for us.
"This was three points on the road against a BIG EAST team, and we're happy about that. This was a big win.
"Outside of Notre Dame, results are going to be all over the map in our conference."
The Blue Demons open that four-game home stand against St. John's in a 3 p.m. match Friday.
