Blue Demons Welcome Pirates to Allstate Arena

CHICAGO - DePaul plays the second game of a three-game BIG EAST homestand against the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons came up on the short end of a 67-65 score against West Virginia to open the homestand on Jan. 4 and host No. 10/9 Connecticut on Jan. 15 to conclude the three-game set. The Blue Demons and Pirates are scheduled for an 8 p.m. start at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.
The Blue Demons have dropped three straight to open BIG EAST play while Seton Hall stands at 1-3 in conference action. Overall, DePaul is 6-9 while Seton Hall enters Wednesday's contest at 7-9.
All of the action can be heard on WSCR 670 The Score in Chicagoland with Zach Zaidman (play-by-play) and Laurence Holmes (analyst). Justin Kutcher (play-by-play) and Brooke Weisbrod (analyst) take care of the broadcasting duties on the BIG EAST Network. Locally in Chicago, the game can be seen on The U Too. Following the Seton Hall game, the Blue Demons host Connecticut on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies, ranked in the top 10 in both of this week's polls, visit Allstate Arena for a 1 p.m. contest on the BIG EAST Network. That game can also be heard on 670 The Score with Zaidman and Holmes.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,371-846 (.618) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 532 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Dec. 22 game against Florida Atlantic was the 430th for DePaul at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 307-124 (.712) all-time in Rosemont... DePaul is 3-1 all-time in games at McGrath Arena... DePaul has: trailed at halftime in nine games, been outrebounded in 12 games, allowed opponent to shoot .400 or better in 13 games, and forced 20 or more turnovers in five games this season... the Blue Demons have used four different starting line-ups this season... in four games this season, DePaul has overcome a deficit of eight or more points... the Blue Demons trailed Oklahoma State (8 pts. with 5:54 left in first half), Stanford (11 pts. with 13:56 left in first half), Central Michigan (14 pts. with 8:16 left in first half) and Ball State (10 pts. with 17:54 left in second half) before regaining the lead... two players have recorded a four-point play this season... Cleveland Melvin was intentionally fouled a lay-up and made the two free throws against Ball State on Dec. 11... Jeremiah Kelly was fouled on a three-pointer and made the free throw against Loyola-Chicago on Dec. 18.
The Opponent - Seton Hall Pirates: Seton Hall stands at 7-9 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST action... the Pirates have dropped three straight to Cincinnati, Louisville and Syracuse after opening league play with a 64-55 win over USF... overall, Seton Hall has lost five of the last six contests... Jeff Robinson leads the team with 12.5 points... he is followed by Jordan Theodore (11.1 ppg) and Fuquan Edwin (10.0 ppg)... Herb Pope averages 8.9 points per game and leads the team the 9.0 rebounds per game... Jeremy Hazell has been sideline with an injury and played in just three games, but holds a 24.0 scoring average... head coach Kevin Willard is in his first season at Seton Hall.
The Series: Wednesday is the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs... Seton Hall holds a 6-2 advantage in the series... in BIG EAST play, the Pirates have won three of four meetings... Seton Hall has won the last three games between the two sides.
The Last Meeting: Seton Hall held a commanding 50-35 lead at halftime in a 79-71 win at the Prudential Center on Feb. 14, 2010... DePaul outscored Seton Hall, 36-29, in the second half but couldn't overcome the halftime deficit... the Pirates led by as many as 17 points early in the second half before a 9-0 DePaul run made the score, 52-44, with 16:39 left... DePaul got as close as five midway through the second half before Seton Hall scored seven straight and never looked back... Will Walker led four DePaul players in double-figures with 19 points... Tony Freeland added 18 points and eight rebounds... Michael Bizoukas scored 12 and Mac Koshwal posted an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double... Jeremy Hazell scored 18 for Seton Hall and Jeff Robinson added 16 points... Herb Pope finished with 15 rebounds along with eight points.
It Could Happen: A win would end a 16-game losing streak against BIG EAST opponents (15 regular-season games/1 BIG EAST Championship game)... a loss would match DePaul's longest losing streak of the season at four games (last, Nov. 16-Dec. 2).
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 67-65 loss against West Virginia on Jan. 4:
- DePaul used its fourth different starting lineup of the season... Jimmy Drew made his first start at DePaul... he made 16 starts in 51 games at Southeast Missouri State (2006-08)... his last start was at Southeast Missouri State against Jacksonville State on Mar. 1, 2008.
- Cleveland Melvin posted his eighth straight game in double-figures.
- Brandon Young reached double-figures for the ninth time this season... it was his first double-figure outing since scoring 23 points against Ball State on Dec. 11.
- Krys Faber scored in double-figures for the seventh time this season (eighth career).
- DePaul's 20 three-point field goal attempts are the most since a season-high 22 against Oklahoma State on Nov. 25... the Blue Demons also attempted 22 three's against Chicago State on Nov. 14.
- Bob Huggins has never lost three straight games during his tenure at West Virginia.
- The Mountaineers are 26-0 under Huggins when shooting .500 or better from the field.
- Tuesday was the sixth all-time meeting... West Virginia leads the series, 5-1.
- In BIG EAST play, the Mountaineers are 5-0 against the Blue Demons.
Three Decades in Rosemont: DePaul is in its 31st season in 2010-11 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill. The Blue Demons are 307-123 (.714) all-time in Rosemont. DePaul University played its first season at the then-named Rosemont Horizon in 1980. The Blue Demons debuted in Rosemont with a 74-56 win over Gonzaga and John Stockton on Dec. 1, 1980.
