LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The DePaul University men's and women's cross country squads returned from Saturday's Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic with a fifth-place finisher in Matthew Graham and a solid return to competition from senior Toni Salvatore.
Graham, who was the top finisher in each of his previous two meets this season, crossed the finish line at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park with a fifth-place time of 24:09.00 in the 8K race. Sophomore Tyler Byrne from host institution Louisville took home the top spot in the race as he finished with a time of 23:47.12.
The Blue Demon men finished in 17th place overall with Zak Koronkiewicz and Tyler Schmitt leading the DePaul pack. Behind the Blue Demons' top three saw Ian Sanchez, Chris Miedema, and Herald Alvarez round out the top six men for DePaul. Koronkiewicz's 25:19.69 time held for 81st in the 240-man race. On the men's side, Purdue took home first, followed by Louisville, Albany, Western Kentucky and Southern Illinois in the top five.
In her first race of the season, DePaul's Toni Salvatore was the first Blue Demon to cross the finish line as she completed the 5K race with a time of 18:11.83 with head coach Dave Dopek calling the race a "return to form" for the senior.
Behind Salvatore, the race saw senior Kelly Pickering and freshman Jacqueline Kasal cross the line with an identical time of 18:58, the second straight race in which the two Blue Demons finished at the same time.
While DePaul does not compete next weekend, the Blue Demons are preparing for the Pre-National Invitational on October 16 in Terre Haute, Ind., hosted by Indiana State. The race is scheduled to place on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course at the Wabash Valley Family Sport Center with the men's 8K beginning at 11:00 a.m. followed by the women's 6K at 12:20 p.m.
