CHICAGO - The DePaul women's tennis team heads to Columbus, Ohio for the ITA Midwest Regional Oct. 20-25 at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Tennis Center. Qualifying brackets are set to begin on Thursday while the Main Singles and Doubles Draws begin on Friday, Oct. 21.
The Midwest Regional serves as a precursor to the prestigious USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Nov. 3-6 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. "National Indoors" features the nation's top men's and women's collegiate tennis players in a 32-player singles field and 20-team doubles field.
The Blue Demon trio of Rebeca Mitrea, Carolin Neumann and Cali Gustafson will all participate in the qualifying singles bracket.
Mitrea received the No. 5 seed in the bracket and a first round bye. The Blue Demon freshman boasts a team-best 5-1 singles mark with her one loss coming in a hard-fought three set battle at the Rice Invitational. Mitrea faces the winner of Ankita Bhatia from Eastern Michigan and Olga Shkundina from Akron on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. (CST).
Neumann is schedule to face Cleveland State's Alex Power at 9:30 a.m. with the winner facing the No. 4 seed - Natalie Edell (Northwestern) later that afternoon. Neumann enters the Regional with a 2-4 singles record.
Gustafson is on the opposite side of the bracket and is scheduled to face Toledo's Chrissy Coffman at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Gustafson, who has won her last two matches, is 3-3 in singles matches this season.
Blue Demon senior Gia McKnight along with sophomore Kelsey Lawson and freshman Patricia Fargas are all in the Main Singles Draw which begins Friday evening.
DePaul enters the ITA Midwest Regional with a combined 22-14 singles record and is 11-10 in doubles matches.
Following the ITA Regional, the Blue Demons close out the fall portion of its schedule at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan, Nov. 4-6.
