COLUMBUS, Ohio -- DePaul freshman Patricia Fargas posted two singles wins and reached the Round of 16 in the Main Singles Draw of the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Ohio State at the Varsity Tennis Center and Jesse Owens West Tennis Center on Saturday.
Fargas opened her first regional with an impressive 7-6, 6-1 win over Nicole Chiricosta from Bowling Green. The Blue Demon freshman found herself in a 5-2 hole in the first set, but battled back, took control of the match and advanced into the second round.
In her second match, Fargas started strong, dominating Notre Dame's Jennifer Kellner 6-2 in the first set. Kellner took the second set, 6-3 but that did not stop DePaul's fierce freshman. Fargas kept to her game plan and once again found her rhythm and moved into the Round of 16 with a 6-2 third-set victory.
Fargas is scheduled to play Ohio State's Gabby Steele at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
Kelsey Lawson and Gia McKnight both dropped their opening round singles match. McKnight bounced back in the consolation bracket and defeated Natalie Edell from Northwestern 4-6, 6-1, 10-2.
After reaching the Round of 16 in the doubles bracket with two wins on Friday, the Blue Demon pair of Rebeca Mitrea and Fargas fell to Kara Cecil and Kelsey Dieters on their home courts 9-7.
