COLUMBUS, Ohio - DePaul women's tennis freshman Patricia Fargas continued her run in the ITA Midwest Regional on Sunday at Ohio State's Varsity Tennis Center. The Blue Demon newcomer, advanced to the quarterfinals with an exciting three-set win over Ohio State's Gabby Stelle.
"I am really proud of Patricia in her first regional," head coach Mark Ardizzone said following Fargas' exhilarating win.
Facing Steele on her home court, the DePaul freshman approached her third match of the Regional with a confident game plane and found her rhythm as in her previous matches. Fargas played with a swagger that most freshmen do not find so early in season and shined on the courts like she has in all of her matches.
"There were a lot of great points at the beginning of the match," Ardizzone commented on the first set.
The first stanza went back-and-forth, but the Blue Demon freshman found herself in a 4-3 hole. Fargas, just like she has done all weekend -- dug deep, made aggressive shots and won the final three games to take the first set, 6-4.
Steele became the aggressor in the second set and evened the match at one apiece with a 6-3 victory.
With her teammate cheering loudly in the deciding set -- Fargas responded as she did in yesterday's three-set victory over No. 87 Jennifer Kellner from Notre Dame.
Down 3-1 in the final set, Fargas again became the aggressor and dominated at the base line. The Blue Demon freshman left everything on the court as her swinging volleys at the net proved to be too much for the Buckeye junior. Fargas closed out the match by winning the last five games of the set and moves into the quarterfinals on Monday.
"Patricia really came out and played hard and confident. The future is really bright for Patricia and I am excited for her! She has a lot of positive energy, makes a lot of balls and really just works hard."
"Patricia has a very hard match tomorrow against a very good opponent," Ardizzone said of Northwestern's Belinda Niu.
Niu, a sophomore from Northwestern, is ranked No. 49 in the Campbell's ITA Preseason Poll. Live stats for the Noon match can be followed .
"Tomorrow there are only four teams left (DePaul, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Michigan) and we are one of the." Ardizzone concluded happily.
Fargas is the first Blue Demon to reach the Round of 8 at the Midwest Regional since Anna Redecsi (2007-10) reached the semifinals of the main singles draw in 2009.
