DePaul Tallies Eight Wins On Day One of Rice Invite

HOUSTON - The DePaul women's tennis team opened the first day of the Rice Invitational at the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium with eight wins on Friday. DePaul's doubles teams of Rebeca Mitrea and Cali Gustafson along with Kelsey Lawson and Carolin Neumann both advanced in the doubles tournament with an opening round victory.
At the top of doubles bracket, Mitrea and Gustafson tallied their fourth win of the season with an 8-6 victory over Caroline Thorton and Lindsay Dovoerak from Tulane. The Blue Demon pair are slated to play the Texas pair of Alex Martin and Elizabeth Begley from Texas on Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Blue Demon pair Lawson and Neumann mirrored their teammates efforts with an 8-6 win over the Penn State tandem of Chelsea Utting and Nina Seric. The win was the pair's first of season while the DePaul tandem faces a Rice team on their home courts on Saturday.
In singles action, Patricia Fargas, Gia McKnight and Lawson all won their opening round match in the Blue Flight. The trio all took first matches in straight sets, while they each fell into the consolation side of the bracket with a second-round loss. Lawson and McKnight are slated to square off on Saturday at Noon while Fargas tangles with Katie Gater from Rice.
In the Gray Flight, Mitrea and Neumann both won their first round matches. Mitrea improved to 4-0 on the season with her impressive 6-0, 6-2 win over LSU's Paige Bahnsen. The Blue Demon freshman suffered her first loss of the season - a three-set battle with Texas' Alex Martin.
The Rice Invitational continues on Saturday. Doubles begin at 9 a.m., while singles begin at Noon.
