CHICAGO -- The No. 19 DePaul women's basketball team opened its first exhibition game of the 2011-12 season on a 6-0 run and never looked back, defeating Illinois Wesleyan 92-59 on Tuesday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Ten different Blue Demons scored at least one, but it was freshman Brittany Hrynko, who pace the team with 18 points, including an 8-for-8 effort at the charity stripe. Keisha Hampton (15), Katherine Harry (10), and Chanise Jenkins (11) all finished in double-figures for DePaul, who led by as many as 38 points in the season's first exhibition.
Anna Martin, Harry and Hampton all returned to the starting lineup from a year ago and Deanna Ortiz and Jenkins rounded out DePaul's starting five.
Harry and Hampton scored the Blue Demons first 16 points. Harry put up six in the paint before Hampton scored the next eight to give the Blue Demons a 16-11 advantage with 14:28 to play in the half. Ortiz joined the offensive party with DePaul's first three of 13 3-pointers which extended the Blue Demons' lead to eight with 13:52 to play.
The Blue Demons went on a 25-8 run over the next 9:58 minutes with Megan Rogowski, Kelsey Reynolds, Hrynko and Jenkins all scoring their first points in a DePaul uniform.
Illinois Wesleyan, who is a top Division III program, put some pressure on DePaul and got into its own offense rhythm and closed the once large gap, but the Blue Demons went into the half with a 54-32 lead.
The second half played like the first, with DePaul's tenacious defense stifling the Titans offense. DePaul turned 15 Illinois Wesleyan turnovers into 13 points in the final stanza.
The Blue Demons' quickness held the Titans to just 27 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Olivia Lett led all players with 22 points.
DePaul tallied 16 steals, with Jasmine Penny and Reynolds each with four. Harry led the Blue Demons on the glass with eight boards, Hampton grabbed five.
The Blue Demons close out the exhibition season on Saturday when it hosts St. Xavier as part of a DePaul tripleheader. The volleyball team hosts Rutgers at 2 p.m., followed by women's hoops at 5 p.m. and men's basketball closes out the evening with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Lewis.
