CHICAGO - In its final tune-up before the regular season, the No. 19/18 DePaul women's basketball team pushed the offense and used its pressing defense to defeat Saint Xavier, 112-47 in exhibition action on Saturday at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Every available Blue Demon scored in DePaul's win over the Cougars. Brittany Hrynko, who led DePaul in scoring in its first exhibition game, paced six players in double figures with 19 points. Anna Martin (16), Kelsey Reynolds (15), Chanise Jenkins (15), Megan Rogowski (14) and Jasmine Penny (12) all finished in double-digits. Keisha Hampton and Karima Gabriel patrolled the boards with eight rebounds apiece. Gabriel also added three blocks.
DePaul set its offensive tempo early as four Blue Demons scored in the first 3:10 and the Blue Demons' raced out to an early 14-2 advantage. Hrynko started the game with a 3-pointer followed by layups from Martin, Hampton and Penny that pushed DePaul's lead to a 9-2. Martin capped off DePaul's scoring flurry with five straight points which forced Saint Xavier to use its first timeout.
Over the next 14:10, the Blue Demons built a 36 point lead (53-17), their largest of the first half when seven different Blue Demons scored in that span. DePaul went to the locker room with a 58-24 advantage behind 13 points from Hrynko and nine from Martin.
The Blue Demons continued to push the pace while is its pressing defense forced Saint Xavier into 13 second half turnovers.
DePaul pressed its lead to 50 points -82-32 when Gabriel completed a three-point-play with 10:04 to play. The points were the first for the freshman on the season.
Keeping its up-tempo offense, the Blue Demons did not let off the gas and saw contributions from everyone. DePaul's bench outscored the Cougars 51-14.
Marissa Young led Saint Xavier with 16 points and Morgan Stutt grabbed 12 rebounds.
DePaul opens the regular season on Friday, Nov. 11 when it hosts the Maggie Dixon Classic. The Blue Demons welcome Samford, Montana and St. Mary's for the two-day tournament.
DePaul begins the season against St. Mary's at 6 p.m. on Friday. The game is part of a DePaul basketball tripleheader. Samford and Montana play at 3:30 p.m., the women's match-up with St. Mary's is follows before the men's team opens its season against Texas Pan-American at 8 p.m.
