Mitrea Stays Perfect, Blue Demons Finish Fall Schedule

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The DePaul women's tennis team wrapped-up the Fall portion of its schedule as well as the Western Michigan Super Challenge on Sunday at the West Hills Athletics Club. DePaul finished the day with four singles wins while the team combined for 16 victories during the three-day tournament.
Rebeca Mitrea capped off her first Fall in a DePaul uniform with a perfect tournament. The Blue Demon freshman dominated Ksenia Pronia from Iowa State 6-1, 6-4 and improved to 9-2 in singles. Prior to Sunday's action, Mitrea had already totaled two singles and three doubles victories, she was the only Blue Demon to go unbeaten during the weekend.
With her perfect 3-0 mark in doubles, Mitrea was crowned the co-doubles champion with Western Michigna's Kathleen Hawkins. Penn State's Petra Januskova was crowned the singles champion at the Super Challenge.
Gia McKnight, Cali Gustafson and Carolin Neumann all ended their Fall campaign's on a winning note against student-athletes from Iowa State. McKnight topped Simona Cacciutolo 6-3, 6-1 for her fifth singles win of the season and Gustafson defeated Meghan Cassens in a three-set thriller 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11).
Neumann, who tallied a perfect 3-0 singles record at the Super Challenge, won her final match in two sets over Tess Lang.
DePaul closed out the Fall portion of its season with a combined 38-31 singles record with Fargas (9-4) and Mitrea (9-2) each tallying nine singles wins. On the doubles courts, the Blue Demons combined for a 20-17 mark.
The Blue Demons break until January when they play at the Northwestern Invitational, Jan. 13-15 in Evanston, Ill. DePaul opens its home schedule on Jan. 21 when it hosts Cleveland State and Chicago State in a doubleheader at the Lakeshore Athletic Club.
