CHICAGO - DePaul wraps up a busy six days with its third game in the stretch against the Cincinnati Bearcats at Allstate Arena. The Blue Demons dropped a four-point decision at #15/13 Louisville Saturday night and host the Bearcats at 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Rosemont.
DePaul enters the game at 6-16 overall and 0-10 in BIG EAST play while Cincinnati is 18-5 overall and 5-5 in league action. Tuesday's game is the second of two regular-season meetings between DePaul and Cincinnati. The Bearcats claimed a 76-60 decision in the BIG EAST opener for both teams on Dec. 28.
All of the action can be heard on WSCR 670 The Score in Chicagoland with Zach Zaidman (play-by-play) and Laurence Holmes (analyst) while the game will also be televised on ESPN2. Following the Cincinnati game, the Blue Demons travel to West Virginia for a Saturday afternoon contest in Morgantown. That game
is scheduled for a 4 p.m. ET start at the WVU Coliseum and can be seen on the BIG EAST Network including The U Too in the Chicago market. The Blue Demons and Mountaineers can also be heard on 670 The Score with Zaidman and Holmes.
Noting the Blue Demons: The men's basketball program is 1,371-853 (.617) all-time... the Blue Demons have knocked down at least one three-pointer in 539 straight games... DePaul's last game without a three was Feb. 16, 1993 against UAB at Allstate Arena... the Dec. 22 game against Florida Atlantic was the 430th for DePaul at Allstate Arena... the Blue Demons are 307-128 (.706) all-time in Rosemont... DePaul is 3-1 all-time in games at McGrath Arena... the Blue Demons have used four different starting line-ups this season... in four games this season, DePaul has overcome a deficit of eight or more points... the Blue Demons trailed Oklahoma State (8 pts. with 5:54 left in first half), Stanford (11 pts. with 13:56 left in first half), Central Michigan (14 pts. with 8:16 left in first half) and Ball State (10 pts. with 17:54 left in second half) before regaining the lead... two players have recorded a four-point play this season... Cleveland Melvin was intentionally fouled a lay-up and made the two free throws against Ball State on Dec. 11... Jeremiah Kelly was fouled on a three-pointer and made the free throw against Loyola-Chicago on Dec. 18.
The Opponent - Cincinnati Bearcats: Cincinnati enters Tuesday's game at 18-5 overall and 5-5 in BIG EAST action... the Bearcats are receiving votes in this week's AP top 25... Cincinnati has dropped two straight with losses against West Virginia and Pittsburgh... Dion Dixon leads the team with 11.5 points per game just ahead of Yancy Gates' scoring average of 11.4... Gates also leads the team with 6.9 rebounds per game... head coach Mick Cronin is in his fifth season leading the Cincinnati program.
The Series: Tuesday is the 48th all-time meeting between the two programs... the Bearcats are one of three home-and-home BIG EAST opponents for DePaul this season... Cincinnati took a 76-60 decision at Fifth Third Arena on Dec. 28 in the BIG EAST opener for both teams... in BIG EAST play, the Bearcats hold a 4-3 advantage... Cincinnati has won three of the last four meetings between the two sides.
The Last Meeting: Larry Davis scored 20 points off the bench to lead Cincinnati to a 76-60 win over DePaul on Dec. 28... DePaul took an early 4-0 lead before the Bearcats put together a 22-6 run... Cincinnati led 40-21 at halftime and by as many as 25 points midway through the second half... Cleveland Melvin led all scorers with 24 points for DePaul... Tony Freeland added 11 points off the bench... Davis led four Bearcats in double-figures... Dion Dixon added 16 and Yancy Gates scored 15 points.
It Could Happen: A win would end a 23-game losing streak against BIG EAST opponents (21 regular-season games/1 BIG EAST Championship game)... a three-pointer extends DePaul's streak to 540 straight games with a trifecta... Jeremiah Kelly needs one assists for sole possession of 25th all-time at DePaul... he enters the game tied with Tyrone Corbin (1981-85) with 227 assists... Kelly also needs seven steals to pass Mac Koshwal (114 steals, 2007-10) for 23rd all-time... Kelly will be making his 30th consecutive start Tuesday night... Cleveland Melvin needs one blocked shot for sole possession of 20th on DePaul's season list... he enters the Cincinnati game with 34 blocks this season and is tied with Lemone Lampley (1985-86) and Teddy Grubbs (1980-81)... with three blocks, Melvin passes Terry Cummings (36 blocks, 1981-82) for 19th place on the season chart.
Demon Doings: Notes following DePaul's 61-57 loss at No. 15/13 Louisville on Feb. 5:
- DePaul lost for the 22nd straight time against a BIG EAST opponent... it was also the 26th straight loss against a ranked opponent... the Blue Demons dropped their 28th straight road game.
- The Blue Demons have made 17 three-pointers in the last two games... it equals the total for the four games prior to the last two against Notre Dame and Louisville.
- Jeremiah Kelly moved into a tie 24th on DePaul's all-time assists list... Kelly is tied with Tyrone Corbin (1981-85) with 227 assists.
- Brandon Young reached double-figures for the 14th time this season and the fourth time in the last five games... he has led the Blue Demons in scoring in back-to-back games.
- Cleveland Melvin scored at least 10 points for the 15th time this season... it was also the 14th time in the last 15 games that Melvin has reached double-figures... the freshman didn't block a shot for just the fourth time this season.
- DePaul's freshmen trio of Melvin, Young and Moses Morgan combined for 35 of DePaul's 57 points... through 22 games, the three rookies have accounted for just over 40 percent of DePaul's scoring this season.
- Saturday was the 56th all-time meeting... Louisville leads the series, 35-21.
- In BIG EAST play, the Cardinals have won all six meetings... Louisville has won seven straight meetings overall.
