DePaul Stumbles at No. 24 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - DePaul freshman Kelsey Lawson defeated her first ranked opponent of the season; but the Blue Demons fell to No. 24 Notre Dame, 6-1 on Saturday on the road. The loss snaps DePaul's three-match winning streak and the Blue Demons fall to 13-10 and are 4-1 in BIG EAST duals. Notre Dame improves to 13-9 and is 2-1 in conference duals.
Lawson, who has won five straight and improves to 5-0 in BIG EAST duals, battled for every point with No. 106 Jennifer Kellner. The freshman is the first Blue Demon to reach 25 singles wins and is now 15-5 in duals.
Kellner squeaked out the first set with a 7-6 (6) win. Lawson rebounded and dominated the second set for an impressive 6-3 victory and tied the match at one set apiece. The freshman, who was playing in the third position, won the super breaker 10-4 which resulted in DePaul's lone point of the dual.
Notre Dame won all three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 heading into singles action. The Irish then clinched the BIG EAST victory with singles wins on the fifth, sixth and fourth courts.
The Blue Demons return to Notre Dame for the BIG EAST Championship, April 28-May 1. The Championship seeds will be announced on Monday, April 25.
