CHICAGO - Just 24 hours after her game-winning golden goal, DePaul defender Sarah Gorden got on the end of more good news.
Gorden was named to the BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll on Monday, signifying that she was among the top nine performers in the league last week.
The freshman from Conant scored her first collegiate goal in Sunday's dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over Minnesota at Wish Field.
Gorden took a pass from fellow freshman Amber Paul and stepped past the Minnesota defender with a quick move to the outside after a left-foot touch. Her shot from a severe angle beat Gopher goalkeeper Cat Parkhill near post.
"This was really a big game for us," Gorden said. "It meant a lot to the whole team, especially with Erin (DePaul coach Erin Chastain) having played at Minnesota."
Gorden had teamed up with Blue Demon defenders Chelsea Grant, Rebekah Roller and Kylie Nordness along with goalkeeper Claire Hanold in closing down Loyola-Chicago's offense for a 1-0 victory last Thursday at Loyola Soccer Park. Rebekah Roller scored the winning goal.
It was DePaul's first win and first shutout of the season.
Gorden becomes the first women's soccer player to be recognized by the BIG EAST's weekly awards program this season. It is also the first BIG EAST award of her career.
Gorden and the Blue Demons shoot for three wins in a row when they open BIG EAST Conference play at 4 p.m. Friday against Cincinnati at Wish Field.
