DePaul Drops BIG EAST Opener in Double OT

CHICAGO - DePaul certainly didn't deserve a result like this one.
Despite dominating play for nearly 100 minutes, the Blue Demons were victimized by a goal in the 108th minute of Friday's 1-0, double-overtime loss to Cincinnati in the BIG EAST Conference opener at Wish Field.
Let's put it another way.
Cincinnati only had one shot on goal the entire 108 minutes, and it came at the bitter end.
DePaul (2-6-0, 0-1-0) launched 19 shots with seven directly at Bearcat goalkeeper Kristina Utley. Cincinnati had nine shots with the solo attempt on goal.
The only shot Cincinnati took in the second overtime was by Jazmine Rhodes in the middle of the box from seven yards away. Emily Hebbeler set up the winning shot.
"We dominated play and created all kinds of chances to score," said DePaul coach Erin Chastain. "We just didn't get the job done in the attacking third.
"I thought everything we did was really good---with the exception of that last play. When you let teams hang around, you give them chances to get back in the game.
"They really didn't have any dangerous chances until the end."
DePaul goalkeeper Claire Hanold wasn't required to make a single save.
The Bearcats took four shots in the first overtime that sailed either high or wide. Cincinnati's leading scorer Mackenzie Grause had a good look in the first OT but sent it over the net.
DePaul forward Morgan Celaya drove one high towards the upper 90s of Bearcat net in the second OT that Utley caught at the top of her leap with outstretched arms.
Rachel Pitman had a pair of chances for DePaul, including a shot that was blocked by a Bearcat defender after Utley had come too far out and provided an empty net.
"We needed someone to step up with Ashleigh (Goddard) out," Chastain said about her talented forward. "Ashleigh is one of our best attacking players.
"Ash is gritty in the box, and we needed that today. Hopefully someone will bring that to the game on Sunday when we play at Louisville."
That BEG EAST match against the Cardinals is set for a noon kickoff.
NOTES: DePaul outshot Cincinnati 19-9 and Celaya's seven shots almost matched the entire Bearcat team... Celaya had three shots on goal... Kelly Blumberg took four shots and Amber Paul, Sarah Gorden and Pitman each had two shots... Arianna Foster and Beth Perry had one shot apiece... Paul, Gorden, Blumberg and Foster each had one shot on goal... Utley was forced to make seven saves... Chelsea Grant, Paul, Michelle Scandora, Celaya, Gorden and Rebekah Roller all played the entire 108 minutes... last season's leading scorer Lauren Pagone is working for the DePaul marketing department and was supporting her former teammates at Friday's game.
