CHICAGO - For the second time this season, DePaul senior Matthew Graham has garnered BIG EAST Athlete of the Week honors for men's cross country. Graham earned the award after besting his competition on Friday at the National Catholic Championship by 20 seconds to take home his second first place finish in as many races this season.
Graham, who completed the five-mile race in a standout time of 24:15, led his Blue Demons men's squad to a seventh place finish at the prestigious event hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. His 4:51 time per mile outpaced the remainder of the 255-man field.
Graham was also named BIG EAST Athlete of the Week on September 6 after placing first in the UIC Home Opener. The honor is Graham's eighth of his career after collecting three in 2010, two in 2009, and one as a freshman.
Notre Dame junior Jessica Rydberg took home the BIG EAST Women's Athlete of the Week honors after taking first in the National Catholic Championship 5k race.
DePaul cross country's next meet is scheduled for October 1 when the Blue Demons travel to BIG EAST foe Louisville to compete in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission. The meet will take place at E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park where this season's BIG EAST Cross Country Championships will also be held. The state park is also set to serve as the site for the 2012 NCAA Division I National Championships.
