Kasal Wins One-Mile Run on Day One in Bloomington

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The DePaul track and field teams finished up day one at the competitive Indiana Relays with one individual victory on Friday evening in Bloomington, Ind.
For the Blue Demons, the event kicked off their fifth of the 2013-14 season and second to last meet before the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 21-22.
Jackie Kasal led the way for DePaul with a victory in the one-mile run, setting a new personal record (4:59.61) while doing so. The junior from Warwick, N.Y., was able to hold off second-place finisher Mobola Rotibi (4:59.64) by just .03 seconds in a dramatic finish.
In other competitions, Tayler Whittler qualified for the finals of the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.67 seconds in her preliminary heat, Alex Campanella took fifth in his section of the 3,000-meter run (8:43.11) and Chris Miedema took second in his section of the one-mile run, finishing with a time of 4:14.91, just .86 seconds shy of his personal best, 4:14.05, which he set at the Illini Open earlier this year.
The Indiana Relays features athletes from over 20 schools. The two-day event concludes tomorrow in Bloomington.
