Alex Bernstein, Katelyn Welsh sweep field awards
CHICAGO – DePaul track and field's Alex Bernstein and Katelyn Welsh have been named men's and women's BIG EAST Field Athletes of the Week, respectively, following standout performances at the Joyce Morton-Keif Invite, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.
Bernstein, a graduate student from Penwortham, Preston, England, claimed the top spot in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 67.38m. The throw continues a dominant stretch for Bernstein, who set a personal record of 68.00m at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge a week prior, a mark that currently ranks him No. 8 in NCAA Division I. He remains firmly atop the BIG EAST in the event, and this recognition is the latest in a string of weekly conference honors for Bernstein, who has now earned six BIG EAST awards over the course of his career.
Welsh, a graduate student and DePaul's first female pole vaulter, has wasted no time making her mark. After posting her first-ever outdoor clearance of 3.57m at the UCF Black & Gold Challenge, she returned the following weekend at the Joyce Morton-Keif Invite to set a personal best and new program record of 3.83m, finishing runner-up in the process. It is the first BIG EAST weekly honor of her career.
