
Blue Demons Drop BIG EAST Match Versus Marquette

Three juniors highlighted the outing for DePaul as Callie Huebener paced the offense with 10 kills and was the lone Blue Demon in double figures. Huebener also added a pair of digs and block assists.
Saige Gallop followed close behind with eight kills and chimed in with four digs and two blocks.
Colleen Smith came within one dig of notching her sixth double-double of the season, but finished with a team-high 27 assists and nine digs.
DePaul was held to a .111 (30-20-90) attacking percentage and surrendered a .304 (41-13-92) clip to Marquette.
The Golden Eagles won the battle at the net, outblocking the Blue Demons, 11-7.
Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Autumn Bailey scorched a match-high 16 kills and seven service aces. Mary Nilles landed a double-double with 31 assists and 12 digs in the three-set match.
The first set began in a point-for-point duel as teams shared the first 10 points. Marquette gained the lead at the 6-5 mark and began to separate from DePaul, leading by as many as 11 in the frame. A block by Huebener and JaQuayla Baker brought the Blue Demons within striking distance at the 11-7 mark. However, the Golden Eagles then used to separate 4-1 runs en route to a 25-15 first set win.
DePaul began the second stanza on a 7-5 run highlighted by three kills from Gallop. Marquette would eventually tie the set up at 11-11 and then took the lead for good. The Golden Eagles closed out the Blue Demons in the second frame, 25-19. Gallop and Huebener landed four kills apiece in the set. Smith dished out 11 assists and had three digs in the second frame.
Up 2-0 coming out of intermission, Marquette put the pedal to the metal and began the frame on a 13-7 run. Randi Leath tallied two blocks to bring the margin down, but DePaul never managed to tie the set up. The Golden Eagles took the final stanza, 25-16. Bailey asserted her dominance for Marquette, notching seven kills, three aces, three digs and a pair of blocks in the frame alone.
DePaul begins its busiest week of the conference slate next Tuesday at Xavier. The Blue Demons then return to Lincoln Park to take on Seton Hall (Oct. 17) and Villanova (Oct. 18) to wrap up a three-match week in the BIG EAST.
Notes: This was the 53rd meeting all-time between the programs… despite the three-set defeat, DePaul still leads the series, 28-25… the Blue Demons have been swept in six contests this season… With 10 kills, Callie Huebener led the DePaul offense for the second time this season… Huebener also set a season-high with two block assists… Caitlyn Coffey's .375 (4-1-8) attack percentage was the season-best in conference play… Coffey tied a career-high with one solo block.
