Double-Doubles from Gallop, Smith Not Enough in Loss to Xavier

Gallop paced the Blue Demons offensively with 12 kills and also chimed in with 10 digs to give Gallop her first double-double of the season.
Smith notched her sixth double-double of the 2014 campaign when she tallied 42 assists and 14 digs in the four-set defeat. Smith also registered seven kills and four block assists in the match.
Caitlyn Coffey set a new career-high with 12 kills, matching Gallop's total for the match. The freshman middle player attacked at a .476 (12-2-21) clip, marking a personal-best in conference play.
As a team, DePaul set a new season-high with 58 kills. The Blue Demons gathered 64 digs on the night, marking their second-highest total in 2014.
Xavier was led by offensively by Abbey Bessler who scorched a match-high 20 kills and 19 digs. Setter Aubree Smith also landed a double-double with 54 assists and 10 digs for the Musketeers.
The first set began as a back-and-forth affair as both teams were tied at the 11-11 mark. A kill by Randi Leath gave DePaul its first lead of the set and the Blue Demons never looked back. A pair of kills from Callie Huebener capped DePaul's 14-9 run to close out the first set, 25-20. The Blue Demons hit .410 (18-2-39) in the frame, marking its highest set total in conference play.
The Musketeers responded in the second set, jumping out to a 10-5 lead to open the frame. Following a kill from JaQuayla Baker, Xavier ended the frame on its own 14-9 run to win the second stanza, 25-16. Both teams went into intermission tied at 1-1 in sets.
Xavier maintained the momentum gained from winning the second set to begin the third frame on a 16-6 run capped by a pair of service aces. The Musketeers stretched their lead to as many as 13 at the 20-7 mark, but DePaul would bring the deficit down to six highlighted by four kills from Myah Reed. Xavier would eventually hold off DePaul to win the third set, 25-17.
The Blue Demons jumped out to a 10-7 lead to begin the fourth frame following three kills from Coffey. The Musketeers clawed their way back and tied the set up at the 17-17 mark. DePaul would retake the lead 20-17 before Xavier used an 8-2 run to close out the match, taking the final set, 25-22.
DePaul returns to the court this weekend to take on Seton Hall on Oct. 17 at noon and Villanova on Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. for the program's annual "Pink Out" match.
