
Volleyball Falls in BIG EAST Home Opener to Creighton

Junior Callie Huebener, sophomore JaQuayla Baker and freshman Myah Reed spearheaded a balanced Blue Demon attack by each notching eight kills. Sophomore Randi Leath followed close behind with seven.
Third-year setter Colleen Smith dished out 31 assists and also contributed four digs, three block assists and a kill.
As a team, DePaul was outblocked for only the fifth time this season as Creighton was the battle at the net, 14-6.
The Bluejays were led by Kelli Browning who tallied 14 kills and added eight block assists. Maggie Baumert distributed to her teammates well, finding eight different teammates for 36 assists.
Creighton hit at a .292 (50-17-113) clip while holding DePaul to a .174 (42-23-109) attacking percentage.
The first set began with a point-for-point battle until the Bluejays grabbed the upper hand at the 16-14 mark. Creighton then used a 9-3 run to close out the Blue Demons, 25-17. Eight different players registered a kill for DePaul in the frame and were led by freshman Rachel Breault with three kills.
The Bluejays then used the momentum from taking the first set and jumped out to a 16-6 lead. Another 9-3 run highlighted Creighton's 25-9 second set win. Jess Bird was a menace at the net for the Bluejays, tallying six kills on eight attempts while also adding two service aces and a block assist. DePaul had the same amount of kills as it did errors (five) in the frame.
After the short intermission, the Blue Demons dug deep and were able to keep things close, tying the set at the 12-12 mark. A back-and-forth battle saw DePaul take control of the set when the score was 23-22 in favor of the Blue Demons. Two straight kills from Huebener and a service ace from freshman Haley Bueser gave DePaul the 25-22 set win.
Creighton came out with a vengeance in the fourth stanza, racing out to a 13-5 lead. The Bluejays stretched their lead to as many as 13 and claimed the final set, 25-12. Four kills, three block assists and a solo block for Browning in the set elevated Creighton to its 11th win of the season.
DePaul returns to the court tomorrow evening when it duels with Georgetown at 7 p.m. at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
