Blue Demons Suffer Sweep at Butler

With the sweep, the Bulldogs improved to 11-6 on the season with a 3-2 record in conference play.
Huebener slammed a season-high 11 kills and added a block assist in the three-set defeat to pace DePaul.
Fellow junior Colleen Smith notched team-high 35 assists and added seven digs.
Sophomore JaQuayla Baker continued her tear in conference play, attacking at a .471 (9-1-17) clip.
The Blue Demons were held to single-digit blocks for the fourth-straight conference contest with their three rejections on the afternoon.
Butler was led at the net by Belle Obert who tallied a match-high 16 kills and also added nine digs and three block assists. Setter Makayla Ferguson had an all-around performance with 40 assists, eight digs and four kills.
As a team, the Bulldogs hit .364 (50-10-110) for the match marking the third-highest percentage surrendered by DePaul this season.
The first set began with a back-and-forth battle as both teams shared the first 12 points of the match. Butler was able to grab hold of the lead at the 11-10 mark and never looked back. The Bulldogs closed out the first set on a 14-4 run to take the opening frame, 25-14.
Much like the beginning set, the second stanza began as a point-for-point duel until a kill from Baker gave DePaul a 12-11 lead. Butler then regained the lead two points later and drew some separation at the 23-18 mark. Two kills from Myah Reed brought the deficit down to three, but the Bulldogs fended off a comeback and took the second set, 25-21.
Coming out of the break, the Blue Demons grabbed an early 7-4 lead in the third set behind kills from Huebener and Randi Leath. Following two DePaul attacking errors, Butler used an 11-7 to take the lead at the 15-14 mark. The Blue Demons were unable to muster a comeback and fell in the third set, 25-20 capped by two service aces from the Bulldogs.
DePaul returns to the court on Oct. 11 when it caps off "Super Saturday" with a match against rival Marquette at 7 p.m. inside McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Notes: This was the 18th meeting between the programs all-time… Butler holds an 11-7 edge in the series… DePaul was swept for the fifth time this season… Callie Huebener set new season-bests in attacks (29), kills (11) and block assists (one)… With her 35 assists, Colleen Smith reached the 30-assist plateau for the 10th time this season… JaQuayla Baker is now hitting at a .301 (32-10-73) mark in conference play.
