Volleyball Loses Tough Battle to Butler, 3-2

Callie Huebener led the way for DePaul, notching her second double-double of the season with 15 kills and 11 digs.
Saige Gallop landed a match-high 18 kills while also adding six digs and a block assist.
The ball was spread around nicely by Colleen Smith, who assisted on a team-high 56 plays. Smith produced another all-around game, scorching seven kills and gathering five digs.
As a team, DePaul matched a season-high with 67 kills throughout the five-set affair.
The Bulldogs (17-8, 9-4) torched the serve with 14 aces in the match. Streidl (15), Kranda (14), Obert (14) and Stahl (11) all registered double-digit kills for Butler. Makayla Ferguson also had a double-double with 55 assists and 12 digs.
The Blue Demons came out of the gates on fire, taking an 11-6 lead off of two kills from Caitlyn Coffey and Gallop. The Bulldogs responded and tied the set up at the 20-20 mark. The teams traded the next eight points before another kill from Gallop and an ace from Randi Leath gave DePaul the first set, 26-24. Smith dished out 19 assists in the frame.
The second stanza was another tightly-contested battle as there were nine ties and three lead changes throughout the set. Butler and DePaul began the frame exchanging the first 28 points. Kills from Huebener and Leath put the Blue Demons up by two and DePaul never looked back, ending the set on an 8-7 streak to take the stanza, 25-22.
Coming out of intermission, Butler turned on the switch. The Bulldogs raced out to a 12-8 lead before a kill from Smith brought the margin down to three. Butler would use kill from six different players to highlight a 13-9 to close out the Blue Demons in the set, 25-18.
The fourth set followed suit to the predecessor as the Bulldogs would again jump out to a big lead - this time a 15-7 start. Butler kept its foot on the gas an evened the match with a fourth-frame victory of 25-14. Obert and Kranda landed five and four kills for Butler in the set, respectively.
Looking to complete the comeback, the Bulldogs dominated the fifth set. Butler took the opening point off of a kill from Obert and maintained the lead throughout the stanza. The Bulldogs registered three blocks and two aces to push past the Blue Demons in the final set, 15-6. Huebener paced the offense in the last frame with two kills.
DePaul will look to improve its mark in the BIG EAST standings when it returns to action next weekend. The Blue Demons are set to host Providence on Nov. 7 and St. John's on Nov. 8 to wrap up the home portion of the 2014 season.
