
Volleyball Defeated by Villanova, 3-2

DePaul was paced by a pair of double-doubles by Saige Gallop and Colleen Smith. Gallop landed a team-high 16 kills and gathered 15 digs. Smith registered a match-high 38 assists while also adding 13 digs. The junior setter came two kills shy of recording a triple-double, tallying eight kills on the evening.
Caitlyn Coffey joined Gallop in double figures with 10 kills. Coffey also contributed five block assists, including a solo rejection.
As a team, the Blue Demons hit .206 (55-21-165) in five sets of action.
Lauren Carpenter paved the way to victory for Villanova (13-17, 6-9) with a match-high 18 kills. Allie DiBernardo added a double-double with 22 assists and 18 digs.
The first set stayed close, but DePaul maintained the lead most of the way. The Blue Demons jumped out to a 10-8 lead before a kill from a kill from Jasmine King put DePaul up by three. The Wildcats managed to claw their way back into it, tying the set at the 14-14 mark. A kill from Smith gave DePaul a one-point margin and put the Blue Demons up for good. DePaul won the frame, 25-22.
The second stanza started much like the first with both teams trading the first 12 points. Another slam from Smith gave the Blue Demons a 7-6 lead. Villanova would rally, however, stringing together two separate 6-3 streaks to push ahead by as many as eight at the 24-16 mark. Back-to-back kills from Coffey and Gallop made things interesting, but the Wildcats would hang on, 25-18.
Villanova came out of the intermission on a hot streak, opening the set on a 7-2 run. DePaul got within one at the 11-10 point following a dual block by JaQuayla Baker and Jasmine King. The Wildcats managed a 9-3 run paced by three aces from Michaela Berendt. Villanova eventually took the set, 25-17.
The fourth set was all about the Blue Demons as there was only one tie score in the frame. Gallop landed a kill to highlight a 5-1 start for DePaul. The Wildcats brought the margin down to two at the 10-8 mark, before the Blue Demons closed out the stanza on a 15-10 run paced by kills from five different players.
Getting to the finish line was tough for both squads in the final frame as there were eight ties and three lead changes in the set. Villanova opened the set with a 4-1 run. Kills from Baker, Coffey and Gallop tied the set up at the 4-4 mark. The teams traded the next 16 points and were knotted up, 12-12. The Wildcats pushed to a 16-14 final-set victory through the hands of DiBernardo, who assisted on the final two points.
Next up for DePaul is a trip to Seton Hall for a 5 p.m. showdown tomorrow night.
