
No. 25 DePaul Falls at No. 2/2 Connecticut

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - Brittany Hrynko scored 17 points, but the No. 25 DePaul women's basketball team fell to No. 2/2 Connecticut 98-64 on Friday at Webster Bank Arena. DePaul falls to 7-4 while Connecticut improves to 7-1 on the season.
Hrynko, who has led DePaul in scoring in six games this season, paced four Blue Demons in double figures. Jessica January and Megan Rogowski each scored 13 points and Chanise Jenkins recorded 10 for the Blue Demons who were playing their third top five team of the season.
Breanna Stewart led five UConn players in double-digits with 25 points with 21 of those coming in the first half.
Connecticut shot 54.1 percent for the game and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
DePaul could not miss from the field and started the game 6-of-6. Down 9-8, Jenkins gave the Blue Demons a one-point advantage when the junior knocked down a pair of free throws with 17:05 to play in the half.
Hrynko was credited with the Blue Demons' next two baskets and DePaul enjoyed a 14-12 advantage.
With both teams running the floor at a furious pace, baskets were traded and the game was knotted at 24 with just over 12 minutes to play in the opening half.
In the opening eight minutes DePaul was 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) from the field which included a 3-of-4 mark from behind the arc. The Blue Demons also had six assists and Hrynko had nine early points while all five starters had scored to start the game.
UConn answered DePaul's tenacity and hot shooting by closing out the half on a 29-9 run and went to the locker room with a 53-33 advantage.
UConn scored the first five points of the second half and DePaul didn't challenge again.
This was DePaul's third loss this season against a top-five team. The Blue Demons fell to Texas A&M in their season opener, and lost to Notre Dame in overtime. Their other loss came to Chicago-rival Northwestern in two overtimes.
UConn had not played a game since beating Notre Dame on Dec. 6, getting an extended break for final exams.
DePaul came in ranked third in the nation in scoring, putting up 91.5 points per game and was averaging 10 baskets a game from 3-point range. The Blue Demons were 6 of 27 from behind the arc on Friday.
The Blue Demons return to action at 7 p.m. on Monday when they host Hampton at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
